Welcome to Information Technology ServiceS

In Information Technology Services (ITS), we are keenly aware that technology is always changing and evolving. The many projects completed by ITS in this past year are evident of this.

A few highlights include:

- We have officially made the move to Moodle. Moodle is an open-source learning management system with a large user-based support community. Along with the ability for faculty to post content online, Moodle offers various features that promote classroom collaboration.
- The Datatel SQL migration project has been completed.
- A new user interface for Datatel (UI 4.3.2) has been rolled out to the end-users.
- Various spaces across the campus are now more functional through the addition of technology.

Much of our work occurs behind-the-scenes. We have already begun working on the planned projects for this year, which include a wireless upgrade for academic and administrative buildings, the deployment of refreshment computers, and a campus upgrade to the latest version of Microsoft Office for both PC and Mac users. We thank you in advance for your continued support as we work to improve both the services we provide and the technology infrastructure we support.

This annual fall newsletter is just one way that we share information about the various services we offer and how different technologies are being used at University of Redlands. If you have suggestions and/or recommendations, please do not hesitate to contact me at extension 8303 or by e-mail at

MoodleIt is official, University of Redlands has adopted Moodle as its learning management system (LMS). Moodle stands for Modular Object Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment. Moodle is the leading open-source LMS. The concept behind an open source application is that there is no license fee to use it. In addition, the growth and support for such an application comes from the community of users who have adopted it.

University of Redlands is not alone in its adoption of Moodle. Moodle is now being used at many academic institutions across the country. From the feedback heard thus far on our own campus, faculty have found Moodle easy to use and they like the variety of options for fostering active learning and student collaboration (from comments gathered after training sessions were held). We began exploring the use of Moodle in January 2011 when five faculty members elected to use this LMS for their courses that semester. The pilot project continued through spring 2012 with many more faculty members making the switch to Moodle.
